Substance Abuse

SCS provides services to substance using women who are or may be pregnant and/or care for children.  These women receive substance use treatment on a priority basis, and will be seen within 48 hours of their request. To use our open door access for services, go to any of our Behavioral Health Centers Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm.

Outpatient Services

Counseling on an individual or group basis for chemically-dependent individuals is available to residents in Halifax, Brunswick and Mecklenburg Counties.  The counseling sessions focus on individual and family strengths in building coping skills and supportive relationships.  This service pays particular attention to honoring strict confidentiality and the enhancement of mutual trust in a supportive setting.

Intensive Outpatient Groups

CHOICES is an intensive group therapy for people with substance use disorders and meets Monday through Friday from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm for 12 weeks.  This service is based on the Matrix treatment model and encurages total abstinence from drugs and alcohol. CHOICES focuses onbuilding/enhancing early recovery skills, family education, relapse prevention, and social supports available to people.

Medical Detoxification

Detoxification is the process of medically managing the withdrawal of an individual from alcohol and other drugs in a hospital setting.  The substance abuse staff can implement and coordinate this service for those who have commercial insurance and for individuals who are eligible for Board-sponsored funding.  During the withdrawal process, a substance abuse counselor or therapist maintains contact with the progress of withdrawal.

Residential Treatment

During the course of treatment, the consumer targets abstinence from all addictive substances.  If it becomes apparent that, while he/she is demonstrating motivation to achieve this goal, more intensive support and treatment is needed, inpatient residential services are available, as long as funding permits, through residential treatment.

Prevention Services

Substance abuse prevention and education activities are available to residents in Halifax, Brunswick, and Mecklenburg Counties. These activities are aimed at enhancing the ability of the community to more effectively provide prevention services in the areas of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse. Violence prevention is also targeted. Services are concentrated on the youth and adolescents of the community, with an emphasis on the role of the family in preventing risk behaviours.
